I look at his body lying there on the ground, and so many emotions run through me. Sadness, anger, frustration… I knew that it was going to come down to this – that one day our paths were going to cross again and that the end result would most likely be the death of one or both of us.

“I’m sorry that I had to do this to you,” I say softly, tears filling my eyes as I look at him lying there. “I wish it didn’t have to turn out this way.”

Bending down, I take his wand and gently stroke his cheek, as if to convey my feelings to him even beyond the veil.

“You were my friend and my lover, and I will never forget the time that we spent together. I will never find someone like you, no matter how long I live.” A lone tear goes down my cheek, as I kiss his cheek one last time. “Goodbye, Gellert. May you find your peace in the afterlife.”

I look at him one last time, then turn as I hear footsteps approaching.

“Is he gone, Albus?”

“Yes, he is gone,” I say, hanging my head low. “The wizard Grindelwald is no more.”
